Franciszek Jakusz-Gostomski Street

Another street surrounding the St. Nicholas church bears the name of Franciszek Jakusz-Gostomski. Formerly, along the street there were situated objects related to farming and craftsmanship. Over the years, especially in the II half of the XIX century, wooden workshops replaced the stately brick granaries. After the war, the buildings were gradually destroyed.

At the beginning of this century, some of the surviving buildings underwent the extensive renovation, so the street has regained the complex of characteristic warehouses, which were adapted for the office and residential premises.

The patron of the street was born on August 14, 1917 in Kleszczewo. Soon his family has moved to Gniew, where he attended school. He started his military service in 1937 in Bydgoszcz. One year later he studied in the Cadet School of Aviation in Dęblin. He participated in the September Campaign. Then, he moved to France through Romania and Lebanon, and in 1940 to Great Britain. He has served in the 300. Bombing Squadron in Swinderby since 1941. He died tragically on September 14, 1943 in Nowe Skalmierzyce.

In his last mission he dropped weapons designed for the soldiers of the Home Army from the perimeter of Ostrow Wielkopolski. The memory of this illustrious man from Gniew, brave and valiant soldier, is still alive among the inhabitants of the town to this day.
