The origins of the fire brigade in Gniew date back to the late XVIII century. In 1849 the existing brigade was organised, establishing the Fire Society in Gniew (Mewer-Feuer Rettungs Verein). Originally, the fire station of the Voluntary Fire Department with the observation tower was located in the wooden building by the current primary school.
The fire team consisted of the urban section responsible for the rescue and sanitary actions, which consisted of 15 women. The social and cultural life of the city has also focused around the unit. Fire fighters organised games, festivals and theatre plays.
Their work was appreciated in 1964, when the unit was honoured with the highest union honour – the Gold Union Sign. The Voluntary Fire Department in Gniew celebrated the 160th anniversary on the twenty-fifth of September 2009.
