The village in the Lowlands of Walichnowy, which appeared in the written sources in 1565 as Grunowo, as Gronowo in 1624. At the same time the German name of Grunhof and its translation – Green Manor – were used. The history of the village in the early Middle Ages is unknown. The re-location of the settlement was done by the Teutonic Knights in the second half of the XIV century.
After building first shafts in the lands taken from the Vistula, a farm has been created, which belonged to the county of Gniew. In the fields, near Gronowo, from 22 September to 1 October 1626 there was a battle between the troops of the Polish King Sigismund III Waza and Gustav I Adolf, the King of Sweden.
Mennonites brought in the XVII century started developing new areas. After the completion of the current shaft in 1855, Gronowo has been additionally expanded in terms of the territory. This way new settlements were formed, which were given separate names Wielkie Gronowo, Polskie Gronowo and Małe Gronowo.
In the village, you can see the remains of the old buildings, Mennonite cemetery and the remains of the old shafts. In the years of 1984–2004, at the initiative of the then parish priest in Gniew, f. Bogdan Przybysz, and thanks to the great commitment of the residents, the St. Maximillian Kolbe chapel has been built. It has been sacrificed on September 6, 2004 by f. bishop[ Jan Bernard Szlaga.
