Kuchnia
The town founded on the patch of the Vistula located between the riverbed of the Vistula and its branch, called Borawa. The name appeared for the first time in the written sources in 1624 and 1664 as the “Pastures Kępa alias Kuchnia”. In the Middle Ages it has probably acted as the defensive settlement.
There were pastures belonging to the commandry of Gniew, and then the county of Gniew. Kuchnia ceased to be a settlement on the island after the construction of the embankment in 1855.
Kuchnia is the original name of the depths on the Vistula River rich in fish. Kuchnia is a typical metaphorical name of the waters, which have got a lot of fish.
