Until 1932, Gniew was the seat of the county authorities. It had schools – public and secondary, and the People’s Bank, “Rolnik” Cooperative and the Machine Factory. Gniew served as the local administration and economic centre. There was also a military unit.
The World War II was the tragic period in the history of the city. The invader damaged the traces of Polishness, conducted arrests and repressed the citizens of Gniew. Many of them were shot in the Szpęgawski forest.
After the extradition of the Germans, the reconstruction and organisation of the city life has been initiated. The significant economic recovery took place in Gniew in the seventies. At the beginning of the nineties the reconstruction of the castle was initiated.
